Update knowledge regarding the management of dental trauma in the primary dentition.
Topics covered include the:
assessment and diagnosis of dental trauma in younger children;
latest treatment options;
long-term prognosis of traumatised primary incisors and sequelae to the adult dentition;
current evidence and guidelines on short- and long-term management; and
appropriate follow-up and timely referral.
On completion you will understand how children who present with traumatic injuries should be appropriately managed, referred if appropriate, and how to explain to their parents or carers about the likely consequences.
Dr Maria Kalkani is a Specialist Paediatric Dentist. She currently works full time at Weymouth Street Paediatric Dentistry in London, where she provides comprehensive oral health care for children and adolescents.
Dr Kalkani qualified as a dental surgeon in 2007. She then held hospital posts in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Guy’s Hospital and University College Hospital in London and District General Hospitals in South East London. From 2009 to 2013, Dr Kalkani worked as a children’s dentist at King’s College Hospital and as a clinical lecturer to undergraduate dental students at Guy’s Hospital. In 2013, she was awarded the National Institute for Health Research Academic Clinical Fellowship in Paediatric Dentistry and began a three-year specialist training programme in Paediatric Dentistry at Leeds Dental Institute, University of Leeds.
In 2016 Dr Kalkani successfully completed her Diploma of Membership in Paediatric Dentistry (MPaed Dent) from Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England with the surgical colleges in Edinburgh and Glasgow. She was also awarded a Master’s Degree in Clinical Dentistry with Distinction by the University of Leeds.
Dr Kalkani is a member of the British, European and International Society of Paediatric Dentistry. She has published her research in international peer-reviewed journals and has lectured nationally and internationally on subjects related to Paediatric Dentistry.
