Prevention in Practice: Putting Children First

Dental caries is a preventable disease, yet in 2023 it remains the most common reason for hospital admission in children and the recommendations of the government's Delivering better oral health: an evidence-based toolkit for prevention are not widely implemented.

This course is intended to help dental professionals address this pressing matter by providing guidance on implementing the recommendations and inform regarding the wider issues.

Topics covered include:

• the impact of caries on children, their families and wider society;
• prevention initiatives that work;
• the role of the dental team within the practice environment and community;
• implementing the recommendations of DBOH using simple brief interventions that over time can make a significant difference;
• common challenges and how to manage them; and
• prevention as a dental practice and team builder.

On completion you should:

• understand why implementing the recommendations of DBOH for children is so important;
• be able to review how you implement them individually and as part of your practice team;
• be familiar with the wider issues; and
• be empowered to implement and help sustain change.
